FLAT BRANCH FARM WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Flat Branch Farm Newsletter - October 9, 2025 - Vol. 8

Hey there, Reader!

If you didn't know, the last week of September Tim and I actually left the farm for more than a day - at the same time. We were in San Antonio, TX for our oldest son's graduation from Air Force basic training. It was a lot of work getting things lined out and ready to be gone - and there was lots to do when we got back. But it was such a wonderful experience that I'm still smiling about.

Dairy Cows

Cheeto turned one month old this past weekend, and we've been back and forth about what his future holds. He is the only calf we have right now, and Lacey isn't due for another month or two. A friend of mine has recently found herself with a little bottle calf and was looking for another. She has an Angus heifer that was orphaned just a couple days after being born. So, we have started transitioning him to a bottle calf and as soon as he is taking the bottle on his own, without us having to corral him in the corner, he will be leaving. But don't worry...I have no doubt that he is going to be very happy and well taken care of at his new home.

Re-Quoting

“If your kids grow up and still want to hang out with you as adults, you have won the parent lottery!"

Recipe Share

I'm starting to have a hard time remembering which recipes I've shared now that several weeks of Newsletter have gone out! This Salsa Chicken is one of our go-to recipes if I have left-over chicken already cooked or if we have boneless cuts available.

This is actually a page out of our free digital download "10 Family Favorites." It's so easy and very versatile. And you just can't beat a recipe that only has 3 ingredients!!

Other Farm Happenings

On Monday I picked up our cured meats from this year's butcher hogs. If you purchased a whole or half from us, be sure to get to the Oconee Chop Shop and pick up your pork! And while you are there, browse through their retail freezers. I picked up some garlic rope sausage and bacon cheddar burger patties while I was there. We had the burgers earlier this week and man were they good!

Another Quote

"Not everything blooms in the spring. Your season might be autumn. Keep going!"

Coming Soon

You may (or may not) have noticed that several items in our online shop are sold out. I announced a little while ago that we are beginning the process of cutting back the amount of meat products we offer, especially beef. We're still undecided about individual cuts of pork, but we will be raising a group of butcher hogs again next year and will have whole and sides available. And chickens will be back next year, too...at least one round, possibly two. I wouldn't necessarily say this leaves me with more time on my hands, but it does open up a window to do a few other things. I've got some ideas swirling around in my head.

A brand-new product will be launching in November. Here's a hint - you can't (or at least shouldn't) eat it. Stay tuned!
